Interesting Facts about Anglo-Saxons.
Anglo-Saxons were originally tribes of Germanic people who settled in England in the period 400-500 AD. Although the indigenous population of Britons still existed they were soon overpowered, and by about 600 AD the Anglo-Saxons ruled most of England.
From then on right up until about 1100 AD the Anglo-Saxon culture dominated the land. There are many interesting facts about Anglo-Saxons some of which are listed below.
* The strongest social bonds which existed at the time were firstly toward the immediate kin and the local Lord, often the landowner. There was no concept of having any form of loyalty to a cause or belief, the bond was always of a personal nature.
* Great importance was placed on past customs and tradition and the invasion of the land by a new King for example, if accepted by the populace as a new leader, would be expected to abide by these customs and certainly would not be allowed to make any new laws without consensus (shades of early democracy?).
* The early Anglo-Saxon Kings were often praised and respected for the position they occupied, but the respect for the actual office it represented was questionable. Kings would thus tie themselves to the power of the church and insist on being âanointedâ by a church leader indicating that the Kingship and God were united.
* The Anglo-Saxon society was certainly patriarchal. Nevertheless the women had many rights which many women are denied today in some countries. Women had the right to own property, any personal possessions including land remained her property when entering marriage, and if she suffered injury or sickness her kin were expected to cater for her needs.
